Preliminary Research: Shot/Reverse Shot

'Shot/Reverse Shot' is a technique used to film characters looking off screen at another character and the other character looks the opposite way to appear as if they are looking back at the previous character.  The audience therefore assume that they are looking at each other.


For example, in this scene in Pulp Fiction, John Travolta and Uma Thurman are looking in opposite directions at the table to show that they are looking at each other having a conversation with each other (or at least an uncomfortable silence):
