Codes and Conventions

Opening:
  • Sets the scene
  • Introduces main characters
  • Creates an enigma/suspense
  • A crime happens















Codes:
  • Dark nightclubs
  • A lot of money
  • Typically film-noir
  • Fast cars
  • Seedy living
  • Contraband
  • Tommy guns
  • Set in a crowded city
Conventions:
  • Characters are usually criminals (particularly bank robbers) who operate outside of the law
  • Glorification of the criminals/victims struggle against authority or rivals
  • A crime happens at the beginning and the storyline follows the victim's/criminal's trebulations that follow
  • The guilty is always caught at the end 
Characters:
  • Matrialistic
  • Street-smart
  • Immoral
  • Has 'history' and rivalry with another gang or criminal
  • Tough on the outside but can express sensitivity
