GANGSTER FILM TITLES
The Godfather:
The completely black background creates an ominous and sinister look. The font itself is simplistic but the contrast of white draws the eye towards is more giving it more of an impact. The 'G' puts emphasis on the word 'God' suggesting a major figure within the film who has the biggest impact. The image above it - a hand pulling strings - has puppeteer connotations but the denotation of it is that the major figure, 'the Godfather', is the one who controls everything.
Casino:
The background to the titles is full of the lights and attraction of Las Vegas - casinos! This sets the scene so the viewer knows what to expect in the film and that it will involve a glamorous glambling scene. The font of 'Casino' is basic and small, with no particular focus on it. However, the font is that like american theatre/film old-fashioned writing suggesting an admirable outlook on casinos.
FILM NOIR TITLES
Scarlet Street:
The canted angle of the street post makes it seem like an awkward but realistic angle as if scene from the character itself. This puts the viewer in a first hand experience of the in scene action. Also, the title being a street name makes the setting seem a real place.
Sunset Boulevard:
The title is printed on the side street which, like the Scarlet Street titles, makes the film feel like it is happening in a realistic time and place. The font suggests an industrial setting, and the fact is is printed on the street implies the events in the film will be happening predominantly on 'Sunset Blvd.
